Hello & Welcome- my name is Julia Jay!

I specialise in Pen & Watercolour Art. I draw inspiration from nature, fairies, magical creatures & stories, creating tiny realms full of intricate details so it always feels like an adventure finding all the tiny things!

Drawing has always soothed my soul & gifted me an outlet to pour out my over-active imagination. About 5 years ago now, it became my full time job- something I never thought was actually possible! I feel so grateful every day that I am able to live as a full time artist! If you would like to listen to the full journey- I share the full story of how that came to be on the podcast episode linked below.

I sell my art in person at markets, festival stalls & pop up shops. I keep a mix of local markets & away weekends/weeks where I will travel with my art. I always feel so excited being able to road trip & experience different communities through their local markets & events. I love all the people I get to meet & get to hear SO many different stories people share with me. I think story time + listening to peoples journeys has to be one of my absolute favourite things & I feel blessed to hold such a variety of tales. I feel excited at the thought of all the wild stories I am yet to hear!

If you would like to keep up to date with markets I will be at + projects I am working on + ALL the other fun things there is a -The MAGICAL MONTHLY NEWSLETTER- at the bottom of the page you can sign up to for free!

Wishing you a lovely day, much love- Julia Jay x

  • I create all my art through hand-drawing & painting (no digital art here, I struggle with being on screens for too long) Hope this material list helps if you are also doing art or wanting to start! :)

Pens - Comic Multi-liner in sizes- 0.2, 0.1, 0.05, 0.03 (these are waterproof, so you can paint over them without them running!) + Uni pin fine line (also water proof) in sizes -0.3, 0.2, 0.1 , 0.05

Watercolour- I have always used random brands of watercolour paints (old ones in my cupboard or ones dad picked up free from the side of the road) but over the last year I actually brought my wheel first set- brand called Hardtmuth, Koh-I-Noor.

Gouache- Recently started to outline pieces using gouache which has been so much fun! I brought a beautiful Japanese box set of the brand Kuretake.

Paper- I only use now the Acquarello watercolour pad- Grana Satinata HOT pressed (200g/m2. 90lbs) A3 size

  • The A3 black & white pieces I was averaging 20-30hrs a piece. The full A3 Pen & Watercolour pieces initially were about 50-60hrs a piece. Some of the recent ones of those have taken me 2-3months a piece now as I get more clear on gridding the energy right it takes a little bit longer.

One piece I am currently working on called “Aunty Ula the Water Dragon” has taken me 1 year and a half- AND she is still going! She has kinda been my background piece, so I am still creating small pieces as I go and then I come back to working on her- so excited she is nearly complete.
